Podcasting - The 10 Minute Traffic Generator And Credibility Builder

By: Nick J Smith

Although podcasting has been around for a number of years, it didn't really become widespread until about three years ago, when Apple created its iPod mp3 player.. Podcasting is just an audio recording of text - frequently a blog - that can be listened to on an mp3 device or on a computer. The term "podcasting" is a mixture of the terminology "iPod" and "broadcasting".

Creating a podcast doesn't need to be difficult or overwhelming. If you want to just speak extemporaneously, as is often the case, all you need is a good microphone and recording device with editing capabilities. It's also useful to have a way to convert the recorded file into mp3 format so as many listeners as possible can hear it. Recording doesn't take long, particularly if there isn't a need for precision.

Nevertheless, if you want to record some prepared text, an autocue can be extremely useful in displaying the material to be spoken so it's easy to read. Professional broadcasters use this kind of device while their newscasts are being transmitted. Seeing your script in front of you and automatically moving as you read and verbalize makes the complete task easier.

Since podcasting deals with sound, be sure to check that your volume level is consistent throughout and the end product is audible and you can hear it OK. Try to remove any background distractions. If you cannot, do not panic as these can be taken out of the final audio, if necessary. You can also add background, such as music, but ensure you are not using music requiring a royalty payment or similar fee. There are almost certainly dozens of web sites specifically designed to make royalty-free tracks available to podcasters.

Constructing a podcast as an addition to a web site is now done all the time. Marketing studies have shown that visitors to web sites experience more of a connection if there is also a voice along with the text on the page. This seems to develop the 'relationship' quicker and increase comfort levels. It's also a good idea to keep your podcast updated and fresh.

Your podcast could reside on your web site or at a remote location with a link to it. You should be able to locate companies that can submit your podcast to their subscribers. The main benefit to hosting somewhere else is it will slash the necessary data transfer which podcasts, due to their large filesize, use a lot of.

You will find podcasts on almost any subject you can think of. Some authors give both the transcripts and spoken word to get their message out. That then gives the reader the choice of using whatever format is most suitable to them. When learning a difficult subject, or one that entails hearing the spoken sounds, such as a foreign language, individuals often find that having both - reading and listening at the same time - provides the simplest way of mastering the topic. A lot of people discover they remember better by seeing and listening together.

And as with books and articles, the podcast is only as good as the presenter. If the material isn't sufficiently researched or has wrong information, if the subject isn't addressed in a systematic method that's easy to understand, then the podcast has no value. Just as podcasting challenges the producer to be interesting and knowledgeable, it should compel the listener to pay attention. This is an excellent way to get an idea out there, and it seems the popularity of podcasting will only multiply in the foreseeable future.
