Water heaters are designed to meet the hot water demands of your household and the heating of water is considered the second largest cost of energy next to heat/air conditioning systems in your home. Whether your home uses electricity, gas, or liquid propane gas there is a water heaters designed to suit. Gas, oil or electric-fired devices are all available for residential or commercial use, but for larger flow rates gas heaters tend to be more common.

The water heater is a device that is used for the purpose of heating water to convenient temperatures. Similar to boiling water by stove, the water heater infuses heat into the water as transferred from a burner.

Gas released from the bowels of the earth with crude oil contains a lot of energy, some of which is harnessed to run a water heater. The energy stored up in propane and electricity can also heat water under certain conditions. The scarcity of propane and the cost of electrical energy generation neutralize their cost effectiveness in powering water heaters compared to natural gas.

Warming of water in the gas heater is achieved by heat being transferred from the burner in its isolated position below the tank of the water heater. Opening a valve on the wall close to the heater is the action that permits the pumping of gas into the heater to power it. The water tank also contains a thermostat that senses water temperature and thus controls the flow of gas into the heater to regulate the heat.

The heating element receives its initial light from a pilot. Gas grills are ignited in much the same way. A venting system collects used up and harmful gas emissions to be expelled. The actual exhaust pipe of the venting system is the PVC pipe located in the roof of the heater.

Thanks to technology, fan-assisted vents now exist for blowing air into the vent which both cools and forces toxic emissions out through a channel in the wall. Connected to the water heater is also a pipe for supplying cold water. One important thing to note is the way heated water flows from the cylindrical tank of the heater through the piping and via faucets to the appliances in which it is used.

Mainly for the purpose of variety, there are also versions of the water heater without a tank. When you turn on the hot water tap of a tankless water heater, the water you get has journeyed through a number of burners and can now be used with a washing machine or a dishwasher. The operation of a tankless heater is different from that of the regular gas water heater.

Being unable to store water, they simply cycle it repeatedly, and supply it at any time needed. More than the regular gas water heater, a tankless version is able to deliver more hot water for less fuel pumped into it. The design of this prototype depends on the opening of the faucet to begin heating. If you are looking for a heater that can hold water, do not get a tankless version. The function of the tankless heater is just to heat water and channel it to the final point of use via the faucet.
